God of the Every Day
God, may I know you are present…
In the tossing and turning at night
In the waking of eyes
In the taking of breath
In the preparing of meals
In the changing of diapers
In the exchanging of words
In the reconciling of anger
In the meeting of new faces
In the reuniting after a long day
In the turning of leaves
In the hoping of healing
In the carrying of another’s burden
In the worrying of details
In the remembering of loved ones
In the honing of an artistry
In the exercising of the body
In the helping of a neighbor
In the changing of homes
In the evolving of jobs
In the completing of a task
In the keeping of a garden
In the blowing out of candles
In the ending of relationships
In the beginning of friendships
In the wondering of what’s next
In the mourning of loss
In the forgiving of bitter words
In the creating of new things
In the singing in the car
In the releasing of expectations
In the holding of hands
In the breaking of molds
In the noticing of the lonely
In the chasing of courage
In the welcoming of strangers
In the cheersing of wine
In the wishing away of the mundane
This poetic sequence of thoughts came from a conversation I had today about God meeting us in the midst of everything mundane. We can even keep adding to this poem by thinking about the movements of our day-to-day lives, our current seasons, and the small moments we tend to wish away for something greater.
But God is there, in the small, quiet moments—the moments that, over time, add up to be the people we’ve become. Don’t wish away those moments for something greater; because true greatness will be defined and fortified by the laying of brick by mundane brick. Day after day. Season after season.
